Layout , Marj's block

I traced the things that I wanted to use from the book and decided where to put them. Next I will have to cut out all the little pieces.

Those are my exact plans, Marg.

I'm going to plan my layout, cut the appropriate wool pieces then decide what design is to go on which piece.

I am then going to cut out and applique each piece BEFORE constructing the actual block.

When it comes time to assemble all the appliqued pieces in a block, that is when I will use the muslin as a stabilizer and affix all the individual pieces to the muslin in the same way you would piece together a traditional crazy quilt.

When doing the applique, I am going to allow for a 1/4" seam allowence because it is my intention to machine stitch the pieces together. Should a design overlap onto another background piece, I will applique it on after the background pieces have been sewn together. Then I will do the decorative stitching around the individual pieces.

I think by doing it this way I might be able to eliminate the need for batting. I haven't decided what I'm going to use for a backing but my initial thought is flannel or brushed homespun.

By adding embellishments such as buttons, charms, beads and other doo-dads in "strategic" places, that is how I will affix the backing to the top of the quilt by stitching through all of the layers...similar to tieing a quilt.

Clear as mud, huh?

Those are my plans but we all know the story about "the best laid plans...".

I got my book on Saturday, and had a ball looking through it! I love it and I'm sure it will be fun to do. I haven't gotten to start yet,as now I am out of town at my daughter's house with a sick grandson. 18months and he has pneumonia! so scary. Anyway, when I do start I like you idea of doing the appliques first, then stitching the pieces together. I have arthritis at the base of my thumbs,so it will be hard to bunch up a lot and hold onto it! Can't wait to get started, but want my sweet boy to be all well before I leave him! Have a great day!

Hello Ladies,
I have my book and wool finally. Started by planning my layout and trying to decide what designs I will put on my block. Kaaren I am going to follow your lead. I think it will be easier to applique each piece before constructing the actual block. So great to see what everyone else is doing since I can't go to any classes. Thanks for all the tips.
